If you create "New" from the bottom, it gives a list of options, one is Custom Data Objects. There you can pick a set and map the fields to a field merge.

Oh - well, in that case I don't think I can be of much help. That's not what I see when I create a new merge field - maybe that feature isn't available in my "trim"

You can try using the jquery validate plugin, http://jqueryvalidation.org/ Lots of custom options, and easy to use.
